1996 New York Yankees
| | World Series Champions |
The New York Yankees' 1996 season was the 94th season for the Yankees. The team finished first in the American League Eastern Division with a record of 92-70, 4 games ahead of the Baltimore Orioles. The team defeated the Texas Rangers in the American League Division Series, three games to one. The Yankees went on to defeat the Baltimore Orioles in the American League Championship Series four games to one.
In the 1996 World Series the Yankees beat the National League champion Atlanta Braves four games to two, winning four consecutive games to overcome a two-games-to-none deficit. The Yankees earned their 23rd World Series title.
The 1996 New York Yankees were managed by Joe Torre, and played at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.
[edit] The Offseason
The Yankees made some key acquisitions prior to the 1996 Season - the most important being hiring manager Joe Torre. Torre (an MVP winning former catcher) had been a mediocre manager with the New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals. The media of New York was quick to bash Steinbrenner's move, with infamous headlines such as "CLUELESS JOE" (New York Post). However, Torre brought the right mix to the team, and has been manager ever since (2007).
The Yankees also signed 1B Tino Martinez (to replace Don Mattingly who retired) and RP Jeff Nelson from the Seattle Mariners, who were an integral part of Seattle's playoff win agains the Yanks the previous year.
[edit] Spring Training and Pre-Season Predictions
The Yankees lost in the first round of the Divisional Series in 1995 at the hands of the Seattle Mariners. While the Yankees were thought to be a playoff team, they were not picked to go all the way in the pre-season.
[edit] Regular Season Highlights
[edit] Opening Day
While Derek Jeter had a few at-bats in 1995 after rosters expanded in September, his rookie year was officially 1996 as a starting shortstop. In his first start on a snowy Opening Day on April 2, 1996, Jeter hit his first Major League home run against the Cleveland Indians.
[edit] Dwight Gooden's No-Hitter
Gooden no-hit the Seattle Mariners on May 14 at Yankee Stadium.
[edit] David Cone's Comeback From Aneurysm
Cone was diagnosed with an aneurysm in his arm in 1996 and was on the disabled list for the majority of the year. In his comeback start that September against the Oakland Athletics, Cone pitched a no-hitter through seven innings before he had to leave due to pitch count restrictions. Mariano Rivera allowed a single which broke the no-hitter up.

[edit] Jeffery Mayer
In Game 1 of the ALCS against the Baltimore Orioles, Derek Jeter hit a short fly to right field in the 8th inning with the Yankees trailing 4-3. As outfielder Tony Tarasco settled under the ball, a fan reached over the wall to make the catch above Tarasco's glove. The ump missed the call, Jeter was awarded the home run, and Orioles manager Davey Johnson was ejected. This allowed the game to go into extra innings, where Yankees outfielder Bernie Williams hit a walkoff home run.
[edit] Bernie's Extra Inning Walkoff HR Against the Orioles Game 1 of the ALCS
With the game tied at 4 in the bottom of the 11th inning, Bernie Williams hit a walk off home run against Orioles reliever Randy Myers. The Yankees would go on to win the series 4 games to 1.
