[edit] Preseason Predictions

Thanks mostly to Mario Lemieux's godlike scoring ability, the Penguins were already two-time defending Stanley Cup champs going into the 1992-93 season, and were favored to win their third straight. This was shaping up to be a scary team, because the team had nowhere to go but up after a disappointing regular season in 1991-92: Ron Francis, who arrived in the middle of 1990-91, was injured in '92 but was a good bet to rebound if healthy; talented prospect Jaromir Jagr's career was quickly gaining momentum; scoring right wing Rick Tocchet would have a full season with the club after arriving at the trade deadline a year before; G Tom Barrasso had slumped in the regular season but showed he could perform with an outstanding playoff; the team was on better emotional footing a year after the tragic passing of coach Bob Johnson; and, most importantly, Lemieux's back finally seemed like it would allow him to play close to a full season. The team's defense was a question mark, but the feeling was that this team was equipped to go deep into the playoffs for a third straight summer.
