[edit] The Winner
"The catch", as it is referred to in Ann Arbor, gave Michigan its first victory over Notre Dame in 5 attempts. 4th and inches. Grbac to Howard. Touchdown Michigan. That is the play that many think won Desmond Howard the 1991 Heisman Trophy.
At only 5'10" tall, he made up for his lack of size with a blazing speed and reliable hands, hauling in 61 receptions totalling 950 yards and 19 touchdowns. To watch him return a kickoff or punt was truly a marvel, the way he careened toward the kicking team, ball in hand, looking at times like a train car out of control. Those outside of Ann Arbor who remember him will do so for a now famous punt return against Ohio State for a touchdown, culminating in him striking the "Heisman pose" in the end zone, leaving no doubt who the best player in 1991 truly was. And there truly was no doubt, at least in the minds of the voters. When the final vote was tallied, it was the third largest margin of victory in Heisman history.
