The 1979 Detroit Tigers finished with a record of 84-76. They scored 770 runs and belted 164 home runs to go along with a .269 batting average. The offense was powered by Steve Kemp, who led the team with 26 home runs and 105 RBI. Ron LeFlore led the team with 180 hits for a .300 average. Ron LeFlore had a great year on the basepaths with 78 stolen bases.

The team allowed 738 runs and had a team ERA of 4.28. Jack Morris led the pitching staff with 17 wins and 113 strikeouts. Aurelio Lopez was the team's best fireman, with 21 saves.
