The 1978 St. Louis Cardinals finished with a record of 69-93. They scored 600 runs and belted 79 home runs to go along with a .249 batting average. The offense was powered by Ted Simmons, who led the team with 22 home runs and 80 RBI. Garry Templeton led the team with 181 hits for a .280 average. Garry Templeton had a great year on the basepaths with 34 stolen bases.

The team allowed 657 runs and had a team ERA of 3.59. John Denny led the team with 14 wins. Pete Vuckovich struck out 149 batters to lead the team. Mark Littell was the team's best fireman, with 11 saves.
