[edit] 1977 NHL Amateur Draft Summary

Once again the NHL chose to keep an air of secrecy about its annual amateur draft. The NHL chose to conduct the draft once more via conference call from league headquarters in Montreal. However, this would mark the last time that the league would have to result to this level of secrecy as talks were already progressing that would eventually lead to a merger between the National Hockey League and the World Hockey Association. The NHL draft would eventually evolve into a very public event that would be televised in both Canada and the United States.

This draft was originally scheduled to held on May 31, 1977. Financial difficulties for the Cleveland Barons though threatened the very existence of the club. Based on those difficulties the NHL moved the draft date in order for Cleveland to sort out their problems. The Barons did get the needed financial backing to at least stay in the league for the upcoming season and the draft went ahead.

As in the past there was no set number of rounds for the 1977 version of the draft. Teams could pass in any round and re-enter the draft if they wished. The Buffalo Sabres passed in Round 7 but re-entered in Round 8 to trade its next four picks to the Philadelphia Flyers before passing again in Round 12. The Pittsburgh Penguins passed in Round 7 but re-entered in Round 8 to trade its next five picks to the Philadelphia Flyers before passing again in Round 13. The Vancouver Canucks and Los Angeles Kings passed in Round 8. The Cleveland Barons and Boston Bruins passed in Round 9. The Colorado Rockies, Chicago Blackhawks, Minnesota North Stars, St. Louis Blues, Atlanta Flames and Toronto Maple Leafs passed in Round 10. The Washington Capitals passed in Round 11. The Philadelphia Flyers passed in Round 12. The New York Rangers passed in Round 13. The New York Islanders and Montreal Canadiens passed in Round 16, leaving only the Detroit Red Wings to pick in Rounds 16 and 17.

The overall draft rotation was set with this order; Detroit Red Wings, Colorado Rockies, Washington Capitals, Vancouver Canucks, Cleveland Barons, Chicago Blackhawks, Minnesota North Stars, New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues, Atlanta Flames, Toronto Maple Leafs, Pittsburgh Penguins, Los Angeles Kings, Buffalo Sabres, New York Islanders, Boston Bruins, Philadelphia Flyers, and Montreal Canadiens.

The player who ended up with the most NHL games played out of this draft was Gordie Roberts with 1,097 games and John Tonelli led all players with a total of 172 NHL playoff games played. Mike Bossy was the goal scoring leader from this draft amassing a total of 573 goals and the scoring leader was also Bossy with a total of 1126 points in his NHL career.
