[edit] 1974 NHL Amateur Draft Summary
Fans of today's NHL Entry draft would be hard pressed to recognize the circumstances and method of the 1974 Amateur Draft. The NHL at the time was facing fierce competition from the rival World Hockey Association (WHA). This competition saw the WHA signing some highly prized underage talent. Some of the more notable underage signings of the WHA included Mark Howe, Marty Howe, Wayne Dillon and Tom Edur. Thus in 1974 the NHL allowed teams to select underage players. Also in response to the WHA the NHL conducted the draft earlier than in previous years. In fact the NHL Draft was held two days prior to the WHA draft in order to give the NHL clubs a bit of a jump in negotiating with the new talent. Not only being moved to an earlier date the NHL also attempted to conduct the draft in as private a method as possible. The method chosen was to conduct the draft via a conference call which was controlled at NHL headquarters in Montreal. The logic behind this move was to keep the information as secret as possible thereby thwarting off efforts of WHA clubs to sign the selected players. All of this led to a very long drafting process which ultimately caused the draft to end just as the WHA draft was begining thus negating any perceived advantage the NHL clubs would have attained in signing the new players.
1974 saw the introduction of two new expansion teams to the NHL, the Washington Capitals and the Kansas City Scouts. The league decided that the Caps and Scouts would each get the first two selections in every round of the draft. A coin flip was used to determine who would pick first and Washington won the flip. A pre-draft agreement was reached between the two new clubs that Washington would select highly touted defenseman Pat Price and Kansas City would select forward Wilf Paiement. However, the Vancouver Blazers of the WHA swooped in and signed Price thereby negating that player for Washington. Washington eventually decided on Greg Joly another defenseman as the first overall selection. The complete draft rotation followed this order; Washington Capitals, Kansas City Scouts, California Golden Seals, New York Islanders, Vancouver Canucks, Minnesota North Stars, St. Louis Blues, Pittsburgh Penguins, Detroit Red Wings, Atlanta Flames, Buffalo Sabres, Los Angeles Kings, Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Rangers, Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, Philadelphia Flyers and Boston Bruins.
There were some additional oddities to the 1974 Amateur Draft. First off the draft had no set number of rounds. This led to a total of 25 rounds, not all teams participated in every round. A total of 246 players were selected which set an NHL record. As mentioned previously NHL clubs were allowed to select underage players for the first time. The limitations on the underage players were that no team could select more than one underage player and the underage players had to be selected in either the first or second rounds. Another oddity was that the Montreal Canadiens managed to obtain a record five first round selections. Perhaps the biggest oddity came with the 183rd overall selection. By this time the draft had entered the 11th round and Buffalo Sabres General Manager Punch Imlach was getting quite irked with the long drawn out process. With his 11th round selection the Buffalo G.M. picked Taro Tsujimoto of the Tokyo Katanas. Tsujimoto turned out to be a fictional player and the league invalidated Buffalo's selection.
American hockey began getting more respect with this draft. In total 40 American players were selected at the time a new record for Americans drafted by the NHL. European players also started getting the attention of the NHL as 5 Swedes and 1 Finn were selected.
The player who played the most NHL games from this draft was Bryan Trottier who played 1,279 games and he also led in playoff games with a total of 221 playoff appearances.
