The 1970-71 season can be considered one of the club's most successful. Arsenal won their 8th League Title and their 4th F.A. Cup. Thus giving the club its first ever double winning side.
The season opened away to defending League Champions, Everton. The game ended in a 2-2 draw. Everton took the lead as the half hour approached. Arsenal would not be deterred though and Charlie George equalized 19 minutes from full time. The goal was costly however as George broke his ankle on the play. Everton then scored a controversial goal to go up 2-1, some claimed a hand ball on the play. Geroge Graham eventually scored the second equalizer with mere seconds remaining.
September 26, 1970 may have been the low point of the entire season and somewhat of a turning point for the club. On that day Arsenal travelled to Stoke City and lost 5-0. It was the only time in the entire season that the club would let in more than 2 goals in a game. Arsenal eventually got their revenge on Stoke by playing them in the F.A. Cup semi-final. The teams drew 2-2 at Highbury. The replay saw the Gunners win 2-0 thus advancing them to the F.A. Cup Final.
