Formula One converged upon Silverstone for the 1951 British Grand Prix, with Juan Manuel Fangio clear in the championship.
Alfa Romeo and Ferrari were joined at Silverstone by a new team BRM, with Reg Parnell and Peter Walker as their drivers. Talbot-Lago and Maserati were also there.
BRM missed practice, so they had to start at the back of the grid. Pole went to Jose Froilan Gonzalez of Ferrari, with Juan Manuel Fangio and Giuseppe Farina behind him. Alberto Ascari could only manage fourth in his Ferrari.
Felice Bonetto came from nowhere to lead after lap 1, but soon Gonzalez took the lead, with Fangio chasing. The two swapped positions all afternoon, but when Alberto Ascari had to retire his Ferrari, it was thought he would call Gonzalez in to take over. Gallantly, Ascari let Gonzalez continue.
By the end, Gonzalez had a lead of almost a minute over Fangio, as he claimed the first ever win by a non-Alfa Romeo. Luigi Villoresi finished on the podium again. The new BRM team finished fifth and seventh, with Reg Parnell scoring a point on the team's debut.
Still the championship was in Juan Manuel Fangio's hands, with both Ascari and defending World Champion Giuseppe Farina not finishing the race.
