Round Five of the World Championship took place at Spa Francorchamps in Belgium.
There was a disappointing entry of just 14 contenders, mainly due to injuries of many of the drivers in earlier Grands Prix. The field that did enter were dominated by Talbot-Lago's.
Qualifying went the way of the Alfa Romeo's yet again, as Giuseppe Farina and Juan Manuel Fangio tied for pole. Farina was awarded pole because he set his lap time first. Rear-gunner Luigi Fagioli took third.
The race was a similar story. The two Alfa Romeo's went into the distance to fight amongst themselves. The pit stops went swiftly for the Alfa's, and Juan Manuel Fangio took the lead from Farina and Fagioli.
Farina suffered late on with a transmission fault, which allowed both Fagioli and Louis Rosier ahead of him.
Fangio went on to win from Fagioli, with Rosier in third, and the failing car of Farina in fourth. Alberto Ascari finished fifth for Ferrari, whilst trying out a new V12 engine.
Giuseppe Farina's late troubles closed the gap a top the standings, which were dominated by Alfa Romeo's. The 158 was the best car, and with no other car getting anywhere near it, it seemed that the championship would be won by an Alfa Romeo driver.
Two rounds remained, and it would see Giuseppe Farina take a lead of five over Juan Manuel Fangio, but Luigi Fagioli, the Number 3 driver for Alfa Romeo was still in the championship hunt.
