George Washington Bradley, St. Louis pitched the first no-hitter in baseball history in a 2-0 victory over Hartford.

Nolan Ryan of the California Angels pitched two no-hitters in the same season.

John Hollins signs for Arsenal from Queens Park Rangers. He would go on to play 173 games for Arsenal.

Former NHL goaltender Eddie Johnston is named Pittsburgh Penguins head coach.

MLB players voted to strike on August 6th if no contract was reached with baseball owners. The strike lasted only one day.
