- George Washington Bradley, St. Louis pitched the first no-hitter in baseball history in a 2-0 victory over Hartford.

- Nolan Ryan of the California Angels pitched two no-hitters in the same season.

- John Hollins signs for Arsenal from Queens Park Rangers. He would go on to play 173 games for Arsenal.

- Former NHL goaltender Eddie Johnston is named Pittsburgh Penguins head coach.

- MLB players voted to strike on August 6th if no contract was reached with baseball owners. The strike lasted only one day.
