  • According to legend, Abner Doubleday created the game of baseball. However, evidence has surfaced that indicates that the game of baseball was played before 1800.

  • John Richmond, pitching for Worchester, throws the first recorded perfect game and beats Cleveland, 4-0.

  • The New York Yankees commit 11 errors en route to a 14-6 loss at the hands of the Detroit Tigers

  • Lou Gehrig homers twice and triples twice for 14 total bases to help the New York Yankees beat the Chicago White Sox, 15-7

  • The MLB Hall of Fame is opened up in Cooperstown, New York

  • Ben Hogan won his first U.S. Open golf tournament.

  • Jim Wilson, pitching for the Milwaukee Braves, tosses a no-hitter to beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 2-0.
  • Bob Feller records his 2,500th career strikeout as he beats the Boston Red Sox and helps the Cleveland Indians move into first place en route to a 111 win season, an American League record at the time.

  • Mike McCormick allows a hit in the 9th, but the San Francisco Giants' hurler is credited with a no-hitter when the game is called due to rain before the inning is made official.

  • Dock Ellis of the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the San Diego Padres, 2-0 by pitching a no-hitter. Later in 1984 he claimed he was under the influence of LSD during the game.

  • Willie McCovey smacks a home run to break up a no-hitter by San Diego Padres' starer, Clay Kirby. It was the only hit that Kirby would allow on the game.

  • The first major league strike that begins after the season starts, begins. The issue was free-agent compensation.

  • Wayne Gretzky of the Edmonton Oilers wins his sixth Hart Trophy. The award is given to the NHL's Most Valuable Player. In total Gretzky would win the Hart Trophy nine times during his career.
  • Mario Lemieux of the Pittsburgh Penguins wins the NHL's Calder Trophy as the league's rookie of the year.

  • The Detroit Tigers retire the number 2 in honor of Charlie Gehringer and 5 in honor of Hank Greenberg. The two join the number 6 (Al Kaline as the only numbers retired by the Tigers.

  • Cal Ripken plays his 1308th consecutive game, passing Everett Scott for the second most consecutive games played in behind only Lou Gehrig
  • Bob Johnson was hired as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Scotty Bowman is named as Director of Development and Recruitment.

  • The Chicago Bulls won their first NBA championship by defeating the Los Angeles Lakers four games to one.

  • Nicole Brown Simpson and boyfriend Ronald Goldman were murdered outside her home in Los Angeles. O.J. Simpson was acquitted of the killings, but he was held liable in a civil suit.

  • Marge Schott is forced to relinquigh her role as managing general of the Cincinnati Reds after some contraversial comments.

  • Interleague play begins in Major League Baseball. It ends a 126 year tradition of separating the two leagues until the World Series. In the first games the Anaheim Angels beat the San Diego Padres, 8-4, the Oakland A's beat the Los Angeles Dodgers, 5-4, the Seattle Mariners beat the Colorado Rockies, 12-11, and the San Francisco Giants beat the Texas Rangers, 4-3.

  • The Baltimore Orioles set a franchise mark for runs scored with a 22-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves. Cal Ripken becomes the only Oriole to ever go 6-6

  • San Francisco Giants outfielder Barry Bonds drills a solo home run (the 675th of his career) off the Baltimore Orioles' Rodrigo López, who becomes the 400th pitcher to be so victimized. Bonds' performance upstaged a milestone afternoon by Rafael Palmeiro, who hits his 536th and 537th homers to move past Mickey Mantle into 11th place on the career list. It is only the third time in baseball history that two players with 500 homers connected in the same game. Willie Mays and Ernie Banks did it in 1970, and Mays and Hank Aaron both homered on May 8, 1971.
