"Mitchell Report" To Be Released Before X-Mas

It is said by the San Francisco Chronicle has reported that according to two officials who have knowledge of former Sen. George Mitchell's probe on performance-enhancing drugs in Baseball, the two officials say that the report will be released before the holidays.

This means that if teams deal for players during the winter meetings, they could find out that the player they just signed could get fined, or suspended by Major League Baseball for a number of games in 2008.  So, this is bad news for both teams, and a few players.  The report is said to reveal current, and former Major League Baseball players who used performance-enhancing drugs, which includes anabolic steroids, and/or human-growth hormones.  The SF Chronicle reported yesterday that Rob Manfred, Baseball's lead lawyer, advised teams to avoid commenting on Mitchell's findings, and/or the names that are expected to be revealed.  So, I do not know who will be revealed in this report until it comes out in the next few weeks.

Here is what the LA Angels' owner Arte Moreno said of the report according to the LA Times:

"The names of players will come out that people will be mad about.  Some of my information is secondhand, but I know there's going to be names."

This report is going to have a HUGE impact on this coming Baseball season, and it will also have a big impact on the players lives, and careers.  In my opinion, this may be the highlight of the offseason, even if big names are dealt to new teams, all of that will be overlooked by the Mitchell Report.  I am hoping that there aren't any current HOFers revealed in this report.

I can't buy the hype. I can't take this report seriously, there has been little word about any aspect of the investigation, and without subpoena powers how can Baseball punish anyone named in this report? I also don't think Mitchell held any actual, legally binding depositions so I really doubt we'll see any suspensions. This report will serve as a clean slate and anyone named in it will be forgiven if they do not break the rules again. If they do they will get the 2nd offense punishment.

The investigation had it's teeth removed from the beginning so I doubt we will see a single game of suspension served.

However, I have heard non-Mitchell related stories that make me think that two of my Fav's will be named: Manny and Papi. This opinion is separate from my view that no one will get suspended. If I am wrong on my first view then Manny and Papi should serve their time. I may cry, but if enough of the big stars get busted I'll be able to deal.

I am a life-long Sox fan, but I wonder how this will impact them. Mitchell is part of the Red Sox, and I couldn't imagine calling your own out. Given that, I wonder if there is a conflict of interest, or how Red Sox nation will react if Mitchell does have the goods on the Sox. I would assume if he has it, he will not withhold it... but it is one of those things that makes you say ... hmmmmmmmmmmm..

Check out Maury Brown's post over on Biz of Baseball, basically theorizing that the Mitchell report'll whitewash over the past.

"Based on reports, the Mitchell investigation will offer up a forward looking set of recommendations, and not address how the PED culture in baseball was allowed to permeate. In other words, baseball may be given a free pass for matters in the past and present, with only the named players as ones being held accountable."

This would piss me off pretty good. If they name names & do this, MLB's throwing the players to the wolves and basically saying "They did all this, it's not our fault that we knowingly allowed them to, we're squeaky clean".
